Carbon Emissions Savings: 1,700,207 pounds and counting

Convoy News, SustainabilityPublished on April 22, 2020

The heart of the Convoy Digital Freight Network focuses on the use of technology to build the most efficient supply chain possible, lowering costs for shippers, increasing earnings for drivers, all while saving our environment through the elimination of empty miles

Today, on our one year anniversary of launching Automated Reloads, we are revealing our Carbon Emissions Savings Counter. The counter represents the cumulative pounds of carbon emissions Convoy has prevented from entering the atmosphere by bundling multiple full-truckload shipments for carriers — minimizing empty miles, and lowering the resulting unnecessary carbon emissions. To date, we have enabled over 1,700,207 pounds of carbon emissions from being emitted, which is equivalent emissions to eliminating 87,621 gallons of gasoline consumed, charging 99,380,032 smartphones, or powering 90 homes’ energy use for one year.

REAL PROGRESS REQUIRES REAL TRANSPARENCY

Many consumers tailor their purchasing behaviors towards those retailers that focus on reducing the environmental impact of their products. In fact, one fifth (20%) of consumers said they only buy sustainable products1. Driven by this growing consumer awareness of the environmental footprint of what they buy, businesses are increasingly prioritizing carbon emission reduction as a criteria in their procurement process.

The first step in any effective supply chain sustainability strategy is transparency with upstream and downstream partners. Today, many shippers lose visibility of their freight as soon as a load leaves the docks. Incidentals are incurred without the ability to identify root cause. Operational issues often go unnoticed without a process for identifying patterns in problematic facilities. Key performance metrics including on-time pickup (OTP) and on-time delivery (OTD) are frequently inaccurate due to manual reporting. And wasted carbon emissions go unchecked. Convoy’s Digital Freight Network provides critical transparency that gives shippers the insights they need  to optimize their transportation and reduce carbon emissions.

Every shipper working with Convoy receives a monthly business report with visibility into cost savings, time savings, service levels, and carrier performance. Included in this report is a section dedicated to Sustainability and the reduction of carbon emissions. Data-backed insights, paired with a business’ institutional knowledge, are what affect meaningful efficiency gains across the shipment lifecycle. Transportation leaders use these reports to make responsible shipping decisions that further reduce their emissions across their entire network.

Anheuser-Busch uses Convoy’s environmental impact data to reduce idle time at pick-up and drop-off locations, helping to minimize empty miles, and placing the brewer on track to hit its goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 25 percent by 2025

“‘A few years ago,’ he says, ‘if someone had asked me which of our locations drivers prefer working with over others, we only had our internal data to tell the story. Now we can use Convoy’s driver-centric data and insights to get the answers to those questions and understand how those experiences are causing challenges for all our partners.”

Environmental sustainability is core to Convoy’s mission of transporting the world with endless capacity and zero waste. The Carbon Emissions Savings Counter is the culmination of carbon emissions saved across our Digital Freight Network so far. Thank you to all our customers and carriers who have already contributed and committed to further reducing carbon emissions in freight. We’re just getting started but incredibly proud of the progress so far.
